Seal rescued at Winkle Beach

A seal found its way to the shore of Winkle Beach on Friday, 23 August.

Two local fishermen, Jay Saville and Shaun Marcus noticed the seal rolling around in the surf at about 9am. “We originally thought the seal was a black bag,” said Shaun.

Realising it was a seal, Shaun and Jay went into the ocean to rescue the animal. “We carried the seal to the swimming pool. The seal was probably stuck in the shore-break for a while. He looked exhausted,” said Shaun.

With the high winds in recent days, Shaun thinks the seal drifted in the big swells. “After about ten minutes in the pool the seal started to relax,” said Shaun.

Ezemvelo wildlife KZN Wildlife was contacted to fetch the seal. The seal probably made its way up from the Cape in search of sardines.
