Fishermen reel in victory

According to minister of forestry, fisheries and environmental affairs, Barbara Creecy, all fishing, including recreational fishing, is permitted with the exception of charter fishing.

Victorious.  That is the feeling that many anglers across the country share, after months of being unable to set foot on beaches to earn a livelihood. As of Monday, 1 June, recreational fishing, hunting, self-drive visits to private or public game reserves and national parks are among activities that the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries has included in the directions under the Covid-19 lockdown level three.

According to minister of forestry, fisheries and environmental affairs, Barbara Creecy, all fishing, including recreational fishing, is permitted with the exception of charter fishing.

Avid angler, Rishad Khan, 55, who has been fishing at Amanzimtoti Main Beach for most of his life, welcomes the lifting of the ban. “As a community we are definitely excited that the ban has been lifted. I am more pleased with this decision since many local residents fish for a living and to put food on their tables. It is also important to note that only fishing is allowed on beaches and no other activities. Residents must still comply with the regulations put in place during lockdown level three.”
