Amanzimtoti photographer always gets the right shot

During lock-down, I’ve has kept busy with my research into different photography techniques.

He can often be seen on the sidelines at with his camera, ready to snap another spectacular action shot. A Kuswag Skool old boy, Johan Meintjes, 50, attends and shoots most of their rugby matches, due to his passion for the game and his alma mater.

“Combining good memories with your passion is one of the best medicines in the world. I started photography from the early age of 20, initially as a hobby and over the years, I’ve increased my knowledge and the love of it, leading me to start my own business two years ago.”

His passion for rugby also extends to Amanzimtoti Rugby Club, where he once played and is now the first team manager. Unfortunately this means he does not have the time to shoot their matches.

Originally born in the Free State, Johan moved to Amanzimtoti 38 years ago after his father was transferred. Constantly honing his skills by extensive research, practical shooting and so on, he has extended his scope of photography to include not only sports, but studio, matric farewells, weddings and family shots after converting his garage to a fully equipped studio.

His weapon of choice is a Canon 7DMii, fitted with either a Canon 100 to 400mm, F4.5 to F5.6 or Sigma 120 to 300mm, F2.8 lens.

He is married to Carol who also has a passion for photography. However, she shoots with a Nikon camera, which often leads to a lot of competitive and passionate debates at home.
