Domino Foundation relief hampers making a difference

Each hamper has sufficient contents to feed a family of four for the 21 days of lockdown.

It has been a bewilderingly unfamiliar situation for many of the most vulnerable members of eThekwini communities caught by the Covid-19 lockdown and they don’t know where to turn to have their daily needs met.

The KZN Covid-19 church response, convened by the KZNl Christian Council, is coordinating a city-wide campaign to meet some of those basic needs. The Domino Foundation’s Cathy Whittle is heading up its disaster relief unit, a partner in the campaign, and has been part of many logistics planning and strategy meetings to ensure the campaign’s success.

Cathy’s team, together with the other KZN disaster response team partners, CityHope Disaster Relief, Nation Changers, The South African Red Cross and Zoe-Life, sent out a call to partners, donors and churches across eThekwini to respond to the immediate needs of some of those most hard-hit by the lockdown.

“Every community is likely to be severely affected by this pandemic and everything we have, spiritually, emotionally and materially, is going to be called on to meet the challenge,” said Cathy.

In the first week of lockdown, eThekwini corporate partners and the public have responded by generously donating products towards an initial 2,000 relief aid hampers which were packed and distributed by the SA Red Cross in various local communities from Inanda to KwaMashu and beyond.

Describing the contents in the hampers, Cathy said that, apart from the basic hygiene items of soap, bleach and toilet paper, there were also non-perishable foods such as rice, dried beans and maize meal, which were packed into 20-litre buckets donated by PailPac who strategically designed an easy-to-follow COVID-19 hygiene graphic in isiZulu for ease of understanding and education. Each hamper has sufficient contents to feed a family of four for the 21 days of lockdown.

The KZN response team urges partners and the public to be encouraged and stay engaged. Their donations are reaching those in greatest need. Drive-in and drop-off points remain at Anthem Church, Durban North; CityHill Church, Hillcrest; The CommUnity Project, Amanzimtoti; and OneLife Foundation, Pietermaritzburg.
