Amanzimtoti rugby coach longs for start of 2020 season

His goals for the second team this season are to build from where they finished last season.

With all sporting codes decimated by the outbreak of the coronavirus, the Amanzimtoti Rugby Club second team coach is hoping the 2020 season will eventually get underway. Jason Hines, 39, said he is holding thumbs that the season gets underway once the virus has fully ended.

After coaching rugby for the last four years, he has attained the world rugby level one qualifications and is currently busy doing level two. “We stopped practices after the first announcement from the president. It’s difficult to say if we can still have a productive season after losing the first few months with regards to the current situation. Right now, starting the season is the last of our worries.”

His goals for the second team this season are to build from where they finished last season and be even more competitive. The second team finished last in the league, but went on to win the junior Murry Cup. “I think we can improve with what we been doing as a club this year, such as coaching new and better drills, having a vision going forward, creating a brotherhood and positive atmosphere, and developing the players to adapt to Premier League rugby.”

Jason was born in Durban North and matriculated at Kloof High School. He is engaged to La Rochelle Landsberg and they have recently welcomed their son William into the world. When he isn’t running around a field, blowing a whistle, he can be found teeing off at Amanzimtoti Golf Club. As a projects and safety manager, he enjoys spending time with his family during his downtime.

He played first team most his life and in 2000 to 2002 he played major league rugby in the USA for the Cincinnati Rugby Football Club, known as the Wolfhounds. “I was encouraged by the Toti Rugby Club to give coaching a go. I’ve coached U14A and U15A. I was the first team assistant coach for Forest Hills in Port Elizabeth with Brent Janse van Rensburg in 2003 and 2004 and Amanzimtoti’s second team last season. Our players have been given programmes from the coaches to keep up their fitness levels during the lockdown, as we have no idea when practices will resume.”
