Domino Foundation steps up coronavirus fight

The DRU appeals to the Toti community to support the prevention and hygiene drive.

The Domino Foundation’s disaster relief unit (DRU) has gone into top gear to educate community, staff and partners about the coronavirus through its prevention strategy and communication wherever it can. After meeting with eThewkini disaster management officials, Cathy Whittle, the team leader of the DRU, stressed the need for individuals to take their role to heart in facing the intense disruption the state of emergency is causing.

“When people ask, “Am I my responsible for my neighbor and community?”, the answer is an emphatic “yes, yebo, ja!”. It is everyone’s responsibility to protect themselves and care for one another. Sadly, we have seen a stampede of panic-buying as people have stockpiled to the detriment of others.”

Cathy said there are many vulnerable people who either cannot afford to buy expensive hand sanitisers or find that there simply is no more stock on the shelves for them to buy.

The DRU appeals to the Toti community to support the prevention and hygiene drive and donate wet-wipes, hand sanitisers, bars of soaps, bleach, household disinfectants, toilet paper, toothbrushes, toothpaste and five-litre bottles of still water. “We are networking with other City NPOs, such as Zoe Life, City Hope and The Red Cross as part of the recently-formed KZN disaster response team, that are in an agile position to get these items to those who are most in need,” said Cathy.

Individuals and business concerns wanting to be proactive and part of this healthy community campaign can drop their donations off at the foundation’s front security drop-off zone at 37 Mackeurtan Avenue, Durban North. For more information on how to be part of this outreach to some of the city’s more vulnerable citizens, email Cathy at feeding@domino.org.za or call 031-563-9605.

The foundation’s CEO, Shaun Tait, has also issued official responses regards the impact on their beneficiaries, partners and staff, and regular information will be uploaded to the blog on its website www.domino.org.za to keep the community actively informed and engaged.
