Amanzimtoti animal lover will be missed

In the last two years, she lived at Poinsettia Park, which she loved.

Toti animal lover Marlene Prinsloo, 76, died on Saturday morning, 22 February after a battle with cancer. SUN readers and the Toti public will know Marlene from the amazing work she used to do for the annual animal dinner fund to raise funds for Amanzimtoti SPCA.

She was born in Springs and when her brother Attie moved to Toti, she would visit and fell in love with the village. She begged him to find her a job and started at Kingsway High School as a typing teacher. She would arrange typing competitions at the school.

She never married nor had children. She lived at Strandberg flats for many years and did the building’s bookkeeping. In the last two years, she lived at Poinsettia Park, which she loved. She was an avid bridge and scramble player, as many of the Poinsettia residents will attest to and played right up until October before her illness got the better of her.

Her love for animals was demonstrated by her insistence at the end of each year to remind people to donate to her precious dinner fund. Even when deathly ill in hospital, she broke into a huge smile when shown the SUN article from January with last year’s total raised.

“Marlene was a huge supporter of our SPCA. She started our annual Christmas doggie dinner fund, which has grown from strength to strength over the years. In her honour we will now call it the Marlene Prinsloo Christmas Dinner Fund. She will be sorely missed by all the staff and committee and we would just like to extend our condolences to her family,” said Amanzimtoti SPCA manager, Tracey Girling.
