Bubbly artist adds colour to life

Her bold and beautiful paintings have attracted many eyes over the years, however, one of the highlights of her career has been when Mr Price Home purchased a painting design that was exhibited at Art on Kingsway Gallery.

Passionate, bubbly and fabulous are just some words that come to mind after being in the presence of 56-year-old artist, Zelda Coetzer, who began painting almost 23 years ago.

Her bold and beautiful paintings have attracted many eyes over the years, however, one of the highlights of her career has been when Mr Price Home purchased a painting design that was exhibited at Art on Kingsway Gallery. Her painting of a Protea was then printed on cushion covers. This was indeed a proud moment for the local artist who grew up in East London and relocated to Amanzimtoti when she was in her mid 20s.

Waking up each day to the beauty of the ocean and the environment around her inspires her to paint.

“I would describe my art to be a modern, impressionistic style that would suit art collectors’ homes or offices. My brushstrokes are big and bold and this defines my style which is energetic, but suggestive. I love painting most subjects, but flowers seem to be my forte. I enjoy challenging myself each day. My family and friends who always encourage me is also something that inspires me,” she said.

Explaining the technique she uses when painting, Zelda said, “I usually create a loose tonal value under-painting to identify the shapes and lights and darks. From this point, I glaze layer over layer gently so that this technique prevents me from overworking it. When I am finally happy with my own painting, it inspires me to create a new painting and the ideas flow automatically.”

The mother of two also teaches art and it something that she is highly passionate about.

“Teaching art and seeing the joy my students have in their completed work is satisfying. I would encourage aspiring artists to go for tuition, sketch or paint everyday and in a year their work would be a 100 fold more developed,” she added.

Zelda enjoys painting with oil paints and acrylics and sometimes uses ink medium, however, her first love is water colours. Rescuing stray cats and playing tennis are also passions of Zelda.
