Doonside shop owner’s killers sentenced

The third accused was acquitted and sadly one got away.

Two men responsible for the murder of a Doonside supermarket owner in 2017 were sentenced on Friday, 14 February.

Four armed men stormed into the First Pride Mini Superette shop while the store owner was opening for the day on 12 June and he was shot dead. After following up on the information received, two men linked to the murder and business robbery were arrested and detained on 27 June by police and members of ET Rapid Response’s tactical response team (TRT). The driver’s licence of the deceased was found in one of the men’s possession.

The first accused, Dyllin Adam was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for armed robbery and 10 years for murder, with the sentences to run concurrently. The second accused, Sakhile Mtolo was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for armed robbery and life imprisonment for murder, with the sentences to run concurrently.

“The third accused was acquitted and sadly one got away,” said ET’s Tony Lokker. “Our TRT worked tirelessly with detectives to hunt down the suspects and it’s always nice to get closure with decent results after hard work in the field hunting these criminals.”
