Man arrested for opening false hijacking case at Isipingo

The man was charged for defeating the ends of justice and will soon make his appearance in court.

A 26-year-old man was apprehended for opening a false hijacking case at Isipingo SAPS on Monday, 20 February.  The suspect was charged for defeating the ends of justice.

The man, who is a driver for an online taxi service, alleged that he was driving along Inwabi Road in a Toyota Quest, when he was approached by two men who stopped him.

Communications officer of Isipingo SAPS, Cpt David Ragavan said the man claimed that one suspect pointed a firearm at him and that he was told to jump in the back of the car.  He further claimed that the men drove off with the vehicle and an amount of R4800.  “During the interview with the complainant, Sgt Cikwayo of the Isipingo Trio Task Team unravelled something was amiss. Eventually the complainant admitted that he opened a false case to safeguard himself. He is being charged with defeating the ends of justice and will soon make his appearance in court.”

“There are many cases of carjacking that are being reported at the station. But, our seasoned detectives will scrutinise every case and if it is established that it’s false, the culprits will be brought to book,” added Cpt Ragavan.

The vehicle was later recovered by Metro Police at Ramlakhan Road in Isipingo with the keys still in the ignition. It was then taken to Isipingo SAPS pound for forensic analysis.
