Boy (15) drowns in Amanzimtoti

The incident occurred in a non-designated bathing area which is not patrolled by lifeguards.

A 15-year-old boy, who was pulled out to sea, drowned southside of Nyoni Pool, Amanzimtoti, at about 3.15pm today, 2 February.

The incident occurred in a non-designated bathing area which is not patrolled by lifeguards.

Spokesperson of Lifesaving South Africa, Jace Govender, said the teenager went into the water to fetch a family member’s scarf that blew away and he was pulled out by the current.

“Lifeguards and Metro Police Search and Rescue did conduct a search, however, due to rough sea conditions it was called off and will resume tomorrow.  While searching for the boy, two other members of his family jumped into action to search for him and disobeyed the lifeguard. Both had to also be rescued and later apprehended for non-compliance on beach safety.”
