Take note of firearm amnesty period

Office hours for Amanzimtoti SAPS: Monday to Friday 8am to 2pm.

In an effort to turn the tide against crime, save innocent lives and stop the proliferation of illegal firearms in the country, Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele, announced the 2019/2020 firearm amnesty period commenced on 1 December and will end on 31 May 2020.

The six-month firearm amnesty period will afford South Africans an opportunity to surrender illegal and unwanted firearms, ammunition and or firearm parts to help clear illegal guns from the streets to create a safer South Africa for all.

All firearms handed in will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine if they have been used in the commission of any crime. This period of amnesty also allows gun owners with expired licenses to apply for new licenses.

Minister Cele has appealed for maximum participation. He believes this amnesty period will result in the reduction of illegally possessed firearms. “I encourage all South Africans who are in possession of illegal or unwanted firearms or parts to surrender them to their nearest police stations during this period, knowing they will not be prosecuted,” he said.
