Get your Lions Christmas cake early

The main purpose of selling the cakes is to raise funds for projects at club, district and multiple district level.

To help them raise funds for local projects, Amanzimtoti Lions Club and Kingsburgh Lions Club are once again selling their tasty and famous Christmas cakes.

“All the money received from the sale of our cakes will be ploughed back into our community,” said Amanzimtoti Lions president, Shayne Tocher. “End hunger one slice at a time and take a bite out of cancer, or buy a box of 20 cakes as Christmas gifts to your staff. The 1kg cake sells for R115 this year and can be ordered directly from the Lions clubs.

The Christmas cake story began in 1975 when a Lion member visited Australia and brought the idea back to Lions Multiple District 410. The first cakes for District 410C were baked by Sunblest Bakery, then by Bakers Bakery, and for the last 20-odd years by Albany.

Albany Germiston baked for District 410B, Albany Cape Town for District 410A and part 410D, and Albany Durban baked for District 410C and part 410D. In about 2001 Albany centralised the baking at Germiston.

For the past three years Retbrands has taken over as baker of the Christmas cakes, still using the original recipe from Lions. The price of a cake was R3.50 in 1975 and District 410C used to sell in excess of 100,000 cakes.

The main purpose of selling the cakes is to raise funds for projects at club, district and multiple district level, such as Operation Bright Sight, diabetes and so on. Money raised from the public cannot be used for administration purposes and must be put back into the community.
