Amanzimtoti rugga star rises for the Sharks

With his commanding height of 1.85m, he is a shoe-in for his position as eighth man.

Gifted young sports star, Ethan Macey has returned triumphantly from excelling for the Sharks U13 rugby team at an inter-provincial tournament in Alberton from 21 to 29 September. His team whipped the Lions 43-0 and beat the Blue Bulls 12-3, but lost to the Valke 29-24 in the group matches and 20-7 in the final to finish runners-up.

“This was my first time playing for the Sharks. It was a tough tournament, but lots of fun and I got along with all my teammates. It was also long – nine days. We play the Bulls again this Saturday at Crusaders to end the Sharks season and I play my final club match on Sunday.”

Ethan, a Grade 7 learner at Amanzimtoti Primary School, is a phenomenal sportsman. At the tender age of 13, he is already 1.85cm tall and he stands out in a crowd of children his age, literally and figuratively.

He was born in Richards Bay and moved to Toti seven years ago. He is one of the special ones who excels at everything they take on. Earlier this year he was selected to captain the Southern KZN rugby team. With his commanding height, he is a shoe-in for his position as eighth man for both his Amanzimtoti Rugby Club and his school’s first team. And as captain for both teams, his teammates have no option but to look up to him.

His U13 club side had only lost one match this season to Rovers, but with the squad depleted last weekend, suffered their second defeat. His leadership and sportsmanship skills have made an incredible impact on his achievements and as house captain for his school’s athletics team and vice-captain for his school team, he has broken a few school and inter-school records recently.

Ethan’s inter-house athletics achievements for 2019:

  • Shotput boys U13 – first place
  • 150m boys U13 – first
  • Long jump boys U13 – first
  • High jump boys U13 – first
  • 100m boys U13 first, new record of 12 seconds
  • Arthur Howes trophy for U13 boys high jump
  • 1995 standard V trophy for U13 boys long jump
  • Clearwater Spur trophy for U13 boys shotput
  • U13 boys age group champion
  • Victor ludorum

“I was offered high school bursaries from schools all over KZN, but I was ecstatic when Kearsney College approached me and said they wanted me to go to their school. I would like to go international with my rugby, but do so while studying, maybe something that involves science, to have a back-up plan.”

Ethan also excels on beach sand. He participated in an inter-schools nippers event at Addington Beach on Saturday, 14 September and, with no nippers experience, won the flags, sprint and taplin relay with his school team, as well as the trophy for competitor of the day.

At such a young age and with all he has already achieved, Ethan excels academically as well. The young man is a bright star with a bright future ahead of him. “With exams around the corner and the rugby season winding down, I’m looking forward to a break,” said Ethan.
