Nine suspects killed during police shoot out in Isipingo

Police acted on information about a planned robbery in Isipingo to bomb the safes.

Nine suspects were shot and killed and another was arrested by police officers on Saturday, 21 September at about 1am in Isipingo.
Police acted on intelligence-driven information about a planned robbery at a business premises in Isipingo and also to bomb the safes.
Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said police officers placed themselves on duty. “When the suspects arrived, they opened fire when they saw the police officers and there was an exchange of gunfire.”
Seven suspects died at the scene and a 29-year-old suspect was arrested. Three rifles, six pistols, explosives and breaking implements were recovered from the deceased. One of the deceased suspects was wearing a pinafore.
“While officers were still busy at the scene, gunshots were heard not far from the crime scene. Two suspects opened fire at officers and there was another exchange of gunfire. Two more suspects were declared dead,” Gwala added.
Two unlicensed firearms were found in their possession. Charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm, ammunition, explosives and breaking implements, and attempted robbery were opened.
