Toti Mambas enjoy new mountain bike event

The GO!Durban, teaming up with eThekwini’s Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network, is set to be the next iconic event on the KZN race calendar.

An exciting new MTB event took place this past weekend, which has the intention of developing into a stage race within the next three years.

The GO!Durban, teaming up with eThekwini’s Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network, is set to be the next iconic event on the KZN race calendar.

The signature 100km race attracted some of the country’s top riders, but also offered distances of 50km and 20km to allow mountain bike enthusiasts of all skill levels to experience some of the best trails KZN has to offer. Even the growing in popularity, e-bike category was included.

The main aim for this event was to provide a challenge for the professional riders and a sense of achievement for the weekend warriors who want to push their limits.

Not only was there magnificent scenery with exciting bridge and river crossings, there was around 60km of premium single track too.

It was challenging, tough, and with a 1 593m elevation gain, the majority of riders decided to enjoy their surroundings rather than race it.

The main 100km race started at Giba Gorge Mountain Bike Park in Pinetown and made its way through the Inanda Valley, along the Umgeni River and up through KwaDabeka on the way to the finish at Blue Lagoon. “It has been the best race to date. We have been losing a few MTB races each year, which is sad, but I am very happy that this one has come along,” said Clinton Evangelides. “Amanzimtoti Cycle Club has to make it a club race next year, as this is one race you don’t want to miss out on.”

Marius Janse van Rensburg and Clinton Evangelides were the two brave Mambas who rode the 100km, while Neil Geustyn tackled the 50km.
