Fry’s pigeons lead the way

These athletes of the sky are truly amazing.

Amanzimtoti Racing Pigeon Club’s open championships race flown from Pietersburg, a distance of 680km, proved to be a major endurance trial for both birds and owners.

The birds were liberated in good weather at 7am on Saturday, 17 August, and after circling a few times, quickly found their direction and headed for home. Unfortunately they met the cold front 100km from home, with mist, rain and a fresh South Westerly wind. As a result, they booked into a ‘B&B’ for the night and continued early on Sunday, 18 August.

Meanwhile, Toti fanciers waited all Saturday afternoon with their eyes glued to the sky, only to receive the first birds early on Sunday morning. Doug Fry won the race with his first bird arriving at 7.04am, followed by Basil Tait and Danny Bradshaw. Doug reported that all his birds were home by 1pm on Sunday. These athletes of the sky are truly amazing.

The club flew the yearling championships race from Middelburg on Saturday, 24 August. The birds were liberated in good weather at 6.45am for their 490km flight home. With temperatures reaching 31 degrees en route, it made it tough going for the birds. Doug Fry clocked the winning bird at 12.35pm with a velocity of 1377.7 mpm (83kmh), second was Basil Tait and third Danny Bradshaw. Danny also won the prestigious Toti nomination, with Basil second and Doug third. To join the club, call Frikkie Reynecke on 076-513-2415.
