Local NGO spreads hope with community projects

The CommUnity Project will be host a party for the 82 residents at Jabulani on Saturday, 31 August at 2pm.

Umbogintwini Primary School learners proved their hearts are in the right place when a massive bundle of second-hand clothes and shoes were collected for Amanzimtoti Cares. The challenge was opened to all the learners to collect as much as they can and the donation was handed over on Thursday, 15 August.

The CommUnity Project has a number of NGOs it assists. The project is an annual community driven initiative that runs for 30 days from 18 July to 18 August, with an emphasis on sustainable assistance. Charlotte Dougans was tasked with leading the drive for Amanzimtoti Cares, a non profit organisation that helps people in crisis, and she approached Twini Primary.

“The need is often overwhelming, so our aim is to take the complexity out of charitable service, by identifying and categorising the needs of the community into individual and manageable drives. A lot of the projects ended on 18 August, but it’s a continual drive to help these NGOs, so some initiatives are continuing for the next few days,” said Charlotte.

“Amanzimtoti Cares does amazing work within our community and like most NGOs they rely on the goodwill and generosity of the community to provide for the families in their care. Amanzimtoti Cares puts together food parcels to assist unemployed families who have little or nothing. My job for the month was to collect as many food items and second-hand clothing for the project.”

Needed items included peanut butter, jam, margarine, toothpaste, toilet soap, shampoo, toilet paper, tinned foods, mealie meal, flour, any non-perishable foods, as well as second- hand clothing and toys.

Charlotte has also been donated two advanced driving courses from MasterDrive, which she is raffling off at R10 a ticket. Tickets can be purchased at Victory Spar in Warner Beach or call her on 083-256-2207.

The CommUnity Project is hosting a party for the 82 residents at Jabulani on Saturday, 31 August at 2pm. “We are going to have an Elvis impersonator performing on the day, as the theme is 50s. We need food items for gift hampers for the elderly such as biscuits, sweets, tinned food, coffee, washing powder, peanut butter jam, as well as snacks and drinks for the party. It promises to be quite a festive occasion for the elderly, who will dress up for the part.” To donate, call Charlotte or Michelle on 076-015-7283.
