Kingsway netball team take on national champs

The team finished in the top 25 at the SA Schools Championships in Gauteng from 18 to 21 July.

The Kingsway High School U14A netball team finished in the top 25 out of 40 teams  at the SA Schools Championships in Gauteng from 18 to 21 July.

Coach, Ruan Engelbrecht was immensely proud of his charges who made school history by reaching the national champs. “Three are KZN action netball players, but the team is made up of grade 8 learners from different primary schools who are playing together for the first time. There are two from Kuswag Skool, four from Toti Primary, one from Twini, Glenwood Prep and Athlone Park.”

Ruan has been coaching netball and action netball for six years and is an action netball player himself.

At the KZN champs Kingsway won three of their four matches. At the nationals, which took place at Dr EG Jansen Hoerskool in Boksburg, competition was tougher, with Kingsway facing Joubertina, Helmekar, Shoshe and Paarl Girls in that order. They won three and lost three.

Ruan had an uphill battle from the start at the nationals, as one of his players, Janine le Roux was injured in the second round and the rules dictate that you have to field the same team list.

“As this is our first time at the SA champs, it was hard to judge how well we would do. I was extremely happy to finish in the top 25, as there was strong opposition and top teams to beat. Just to be named as the top school in KZN was a huge achievement for us,” said Ruan.
