Make a difference with CANSA this Mandela Day

Items required to assemble CANSA Care Packs include basic toiletries, snacks and warm items of clothing.

THIS Mandela Day, the Cancer Association of South Africa, with your help, aims to collect 6 700 care packs for cancer patients to distribute to patients in need at public hospitals and CANSA Care Homes. Donations will be received at your local CANSA Care Centre.

The organisation aims to bring relief and to inspire hope when delivering the CANSA Care Packs to newly diagnosed cancer patients or those undergoing treatment.

According to a statement by the organisation, donations will mostly benefit impoverished patients. “Many disadvantaged patients not only face the shock of a cancer diagnosis, but are also very poor, not even able to afford basic toiletries, warm items or snacks. Patients sometimes end up stranded at hospitals when their appointments run over time or have to stay overnight where they had not anticipated this, and others have to undergo more procedures than expected. We want to provide care packs for as many patients as possible on Mandela Day in keeping with Nelson Mandela’s spirit of kindness, selflessness, and generosity,” the statement read.

Items required to assemble CANSA Care Packs include basic toiletries, snacks and warm items of clothing. A message of hope and encouragement is also included in each pack.  View the full list of items here.

CANSA will be visiting hospitals across the country on Thursday, 18 July, to hand out care packs, volunteers are welcome. Alternatively, you can contribute towards CANSA Care Packs by making a general donation online, which will be used towards support programmes for patients.

CANSA is a volunteer-driven organisation serving cancer patients, caregivers and loved ones in communities across South Africa and is always in need of new recruits. If you would like to volunteer, sign up online, or contact your local CANSA Care Centre.

Visit the Durban CANSA Care Centre on 619 Umbilo Road, Durban, to make your donation drop off or call 031-205 9525 for more information. Join the movement on social media using the hashtags  #ActionAgainstPoverty, and #MandelaDay.
