Help reach out to flood victims

Donate items to make up the hampers or donate a relief aid hamper online.

Last month’s deluge which hit Amanzimtoti unleashed a trail of destruction and desolation in many vulnerable communities. Among those affected were a number of the crèches the Domino Foundation’s feeding programme in the South Basin works with.

The foundation, partnering with the eThekwini Disaster Management and Emergency Committee (DMEC), has mobilised resources to assist those most affected in the wake of the storm, including families whose children attend the crèches.

Hard on the heels of the response phase of managing the disaster, where search and rescue is of prime importance, comes food security and health. The foundation is set to give additional capacity to the co-ordinated effort by providing relief to 500 families in the greater eThekwini area affected by the deluge over the next month.

Cathy Whittle, relief co-ordinator at the Domino Foundation, outlined what this entails: “We will supply water, sanitation and hygiene packs, as well as emergency food hampers which will sustain a family of five for two weeks.” At the end of a fortnight, a second hamper will be distributed to each family.

JAM SA, a long-time partner of the Domino Foundation, will provide each displaced family with a 25kg bag of nutritious porridge mix and a bag of soup mix to complement the relief aid hampers.

Cathy appealed to the Amanzimtoti community to donate items to make up the hampers or to purchase or donate a relief aid hamper online at www.dominofoundation.org.za/shop. “Full or part hampers are most welcome and items can be dropped off at Kingsway Church International (KCI), 24 Queen’s Terrace, Amanzimtoti,” said Cathy.
