Toti resident to take on swimming challenge for CHOC

Monica Botha, and legendary swimmer Dominique Donner will swim 64 lengths of the pool.

The CHOC Cows Friends of Swimmers Trust hosts a mile swim at Aqua Lifestyle Centre, 7 Bult Street, St Winifreds on Sunday, 3 February from 10am. The 2018 provincial 200m freestyle record holder and Toti resident, Monica Botha, and legendary swimmer Dominique Donner will swim 64 lengths of the pool, (which equals one mile), to raise funds for the trust.

Monica is the reigning 11-year-old KZN top female swimmer and is also the 2019 Aqua Lifestyle Centre Brand Ambassador. She swims for the North Coast Dolphins swimming team.

Dominique is the swimming director and head coach at North Coast Dolphins swimming team. She is a former professional triathlete who earned national colours in triathlon, duathlon (triple) and biathlon. She also earned provincial colours in swimming, aquathlon, lifesaving, squash and netball. She is a former national and African champion in triathlon, and Triathlete of the Decade from 1990 to 2000. Dominique raced the World Cup Series, World Championships and represented SA at the Goodwill Games in 2001.

The Dolphins team, in association with Friends of Swimmers Trust, is responsible for several outreach programmes in KZN, such as the LlV Village swimming programme, Maidstone Primary School development programme, Solomon Mahlangu Primary School and Imbatlto Hope College for Autism Survival swimming programmes.

Since September the trust has rolled out 47 programmes. A total of 13,480 pupils and 382 teachers attended 34 water safety workshops, 556 children benefited from its extensive learn-to-swim programmes and 702 young athletes took part in sport and education programmes.

“We are trying to involve businesses in Toti in our fundraising efforts on 3 February and we would appreciate their support,” said Monica’s mother, Marinda Stuiver. “We will display their banners if they donate and we will thank them with links to their social media pages featuring photos and videos of the event.”
