Pet owners advised to microchip furry friends through Toti SPCA offer

The Toti SPCA will microchip your cat or dog for only R120 this Friday and Saturday.

THIS Friday, 2 November and Saturday, 3 November, the Amanzimtoti SPCA will offer microchipping at a giveaway cost of R120 for a dog or cat.
With the increase in dog and cat theft, the shelter urges pet owners to microchip their animals.

Over the festive season many pets go missing or stolen, explained Michelle Hannan of Toti SPCA.
“When animals are microchipped, it makes it easier to reunite them with their owners. We are with Identipet, a chip recognised nationally and internationally,” said Michelle.

In this local case an owner had her stolen German shepherd puppy returned to her immediately: Stolen Amanzimtoti German shepherd puppy returned to owner before she even knew it was missing

Michelle explained the importance of microchipping.
“Firstly, if your pet gets out your yard and gets lost or is found by someone that doesn’t know where the pet resides, they can take it to a shelter or vet where they can scan the pet for a chip,” she said.

“This chip then links up with an online data base with the contact details of the owner and a close family friend or relative. Secondly, if an animal gets out of the yard and is injured in any way, the vet will scan the animal for a microchip and immediately locate the owner.”

Michelle further explained that when an animal is stolen for dog fighting (cats are used in fighting too), breeding purposes or selling purposes, any visible collars and identification will be removed.

“Microchipping your pet is a sure way to prove the pet is yours,” said Michelle.
