The sewage infrastructure along the Amanzimtoti River, south of the Amanzimtoti railway station, is stable and without leaks and will be repaired in due course. That’s the word from ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge after members of the community expressed concern regarding what was seen as imminent waste water infrastructure failure near the stormwater outfall.
“The situation has remained unchanged for more than a year, as while the stormwater gabion and soil around the sewer manhole along the eastern wall and closer to the railway line has been compromised, the actual sewer line remains stable and without leaks,” he said.
The embankment suffered initial damage when the railway line flooded in 2016. This was due to be repaired in the 2017/18 financial year. “The storm of 10 October 2017, however, caused the railway line to flood once again and the project was reprioritised in favour of projects where failing or failed infrastructure necessitated immediate attention such as at Dick King Place, Hutchison Park, Kingsway and so on.
With these projects reaching completion, savings incurred will be applied to attend to some of the projects that remain on the list but that was not deemed emergency at the time. The reinstatement of the Toti River gabions is one of those identified.”
