THE Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints rendered a volunteer service at Zuzumqhele High School from Tuesday, 28 July to Saturday, 1 September.
The church identified Zuzumqhele High as one of the needy schools in the nearby community at which it wanted to assist and the school was more than willing to offer the church a chance to serve.
“One of the fundamental principles of the gospel church is to serve and through the Helping Hands programme, the church is able to accomplish one of its objectives, which is to serve communities,” said Dr Nokuzola Cele, chairman of the Helping Hands programme of the church.
The school’s SGB members and some pupils joined members of the church as they scraped the walls, filled in cracks and repainted the admin block afresh.
It was hard to put into words the feeling of seeing the Saints heed the call to serve with generosity and enthusiasm. Many hours of labour were donated to bring about change to the school premises.
The church marveled to see ward councillor Thabsile Zungu present on the final day of the project, as she joined the church with a number of community members to lend a hand in cleaning up the premises.
The project culmination day and handover to the principal took place on Saturday, 1 September and the SGB and ward councillor were present.
Boxes of secondhand clothing were also donated to the school, to be given to the orphans and vulnerable children in Zuzumqhele High. The principal and SGB showed appreciation for the work done and gifts of secondhand clothing.
