ACC cycling duo’s 24-hour MTB race raises funds for bike accident victim
There are only a few riders who would attempt such a race and there are people who, for a good cause, would ride it back-to-back!
THE Trans Baviaans is a 24 hour mountain bike marathon single stage race of 230km from Willowmore in the heart of the Eastern Cape Karoo through the world heritage site and remote Baviaans Kloof to finish in Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa’s surfing capital.
Simply put, it is the original and toughest single stage race in the world. There are only a few riders who would attempt such a race and there are people who, for a good cause, would ride it back-to-back!
On Friday, 10 August, Cindy Theunissen of Amanzimtoti Cycling Club (ACC) once again teamed up with Sarah van Heerden to first ride the event in reverse and then on Saturday, 11 August to ride the Trans Baviaans Race in support of Jason Hall.
In June, Jason had an accident while cycling, leaving him with a broken back and neck and two young sons with a critically injured father. Not only did Cindy and Sarah manage to raise the much-needed medical funds for Jason, but they rode so well, they were the second women’s team to finish the race section in a time of 11:41:44. A truly remarkable achievement.

ACC is currently sponsoring 12 riders from Umlazi and appeals to anyone who may have bicycle items they no longer require such as pumps, shoes, helmets, clothing, pedals, tubes, tyres and so on. Some tracks around Hutchison Park have been made higher so they are accessible to the public 24/7/365. The ongoing upkeep of the tracks is done exclusively by ACC. The club is grateful for donations received and has introduced the Zapper facility for such contributions. No matter how big or small, all donations are greatly appreciated.
