Appeal for aid as Amanzimtoti SPCA treats dog with gunshot wounds

Both dogs appeared neglected and were surrendered to the SPCA by their owner. It is unclear under what circumstances or why they were shot.

TWO dogs that sustained gunshot wounds were surrendered to Amanzimtoti SPCA on Tuesday, 2 January.

One of the dogs, which was shot in the face, succumbed to its wounds, but the other is undergoing costly treatment and procedures and the local shelter has issued a plea to the community for financial assistance.

The surviving dog has been named Dulux, as he resembles the iconic fluffy pooch linked to the painting company. Dulux was shot in the foot and is undergoing operations to remove bullet fragments.

Both dogs appeared neglected and were surrendered to the SPCA by their owner. It is unclear under what circumstances or why they were shot.

“This boy is incredibly special,” said dog rescuer Karen Wadsworth Borain, who spent some time with the pooch. “He was in excruciating pain and trembled with fear, but he let me carry him around and would still lean in for cuddles. He is still a very young boy but with an old soul. He is a gentle little guy, and he still trusts after everything humans have done to him, things we can’t begin to imagine.”

While Amanzimtoti SPCA is committed to doing everything possible to help him, veterinary procedures come at a high price.

“After his surgery, Dulux will begin his long rehabilitation journey,” said Karen. “This tiny branch in a small seaside town battles to scrape by every month, but its heart remains big and its intentions pure. They know Dulux deserves a better life, and they will ensure he gets that but they cannot do it alone.

They survive on donations, and cases like Dulux are costly. Please help the SPCA help Dulux, so they can provide him with the very best care and all the medical treatment he needs.”

While all parties are well aware that financially January is the longest month of the year, any amount big or small will add up.

“Dulux deserves a break in life,” she said.
