Library donation brings world of learning to Bhekulwandle

If any local schools would like to donate any books, call Kierra on 031-903-1125.

Bhekuwandle children can now enjoy the magical world of reading after a library was donated to Seed of Hope (SOH).

Woolworths Galleria, Musgrave and Shelley Beach transformed an old garage on the property into a children’s library for SOH’s after-school primary school programme.
On Friday, 6 October at 10.30am they launched the library with a children’s party and spoilt the youngsters with tasty treats.

Woolworths staff said they wanted to leave a legacy behind, something that will benefit the community long after they are gone.

They converted the musty old garage into a lively and colourful space in a blistering two weeks, with staff members doing the manual labour themselves, while sourcing books and magazines through donations from customers. The project was part of Woolworths’ sustainability programme.

“The library is awesome,” said SOH CEO, Kierra Ward. “A big thank you to Woolworths for all they have done.

This project was on our wishlist for over a year. When they called and asked how they can help us, they immediately jumped at the chance to tackle this project.
They did all the work themselves, it was just amazing.”

The library is aimed at grades R to 7 pupils. Many Bhekuwandle children only learn to read English from grade 3. The library will go a long way to start teaching them earlier, so that when they reach grade 1 they can already speak and read the language.

The library is part of SOH’s Simunye programme, to help motivate and equip pupils to develop a love for learning and reading.

“Book Boutique also donated high school text books, as well as isiZulu children’s books,” said Kierra. “We partner with Bhekulwandle Junior Primary School, as well as Dr Made High School, so this library is a good foundation for the children. With even more books, we can have more resources.

There was no library in Bhekulwandle before this. The closest one was at Amanzimtoti, so it will be a big help to us.”

If any local schools would like to donate any books, especially ‘learn to read’ books for young children, call Kierra on 031-903-1125.
