Large parts of eThekwini Municipality’s electricity network were severely affected by Tuesday’s heavy downpour, causing widespread outages on the network.
A number of affected areas were remotely restored on alternate feeds.
Much of Doonside was without electricity from the mid-afternoon until about midnight, as a result of storm-related damage.
Portions of the supply to Metrorail and Transnet were still off on Wednesday morning and municipal staff were on site to restore power through alternative networks.

The situation was exacerbated by road closures on the M4 and N2, as faults crews could not reach Lotus Park and Durban South substations to restore tripped circuits.
There were over 500 faults reported since Tuesday morning, many of which affected large areas.
Areas affected in the South are Prospecton and Athlone Park.

“eThekwini Municipality’s electricity contact centre is currently heavily back-logged and customers are urged to report their faults via the SMS line on 083-700-0819, email custocare@elec.durban.gov.za or via the website www.durban.gov.za (go to online services), should they have difficulty reaching us via the toll free number 080-131-3111.
Residents are requested to only call the emergency management call centre for emergencies on 031-361-0000,” said eThekwini Municipality head of communications, Tozi Mthethwa.
