Dynamic paddling duo makes great strides

The Amanzimtoti Watersports Club members took up the sport less than a year ago and have grown their talent in leaps and bounds.

AVID paddlers and sisters, Stephane (12) and Jessica (14) Erasmus excelled at the South African Canoe Championships in August.

The Amanzimtoti Watersports Club members took up the sport less than a year ago and have grown their talent in leaps and bounds.

Stephane and Jessica are pupils of Kuswag Skool, swim for Titans Swimming Club and are nippers at Winklespruit Surf Lifesaving Club. Their involvement in watersports drove them to attend the Toti Watersports Club open day last October.

“The coach saw a talent in my girls that I had obviously not noticed,” said proud mother, Anneke Erasmus. “He assured us that by joining the club, they would reach great heights and in their year of paddling, they certainly have.”

The sisters competed in the South African Canoe Championships on Saturday, 12 August in Camps Drift, Pietermaritzburg. Stephane placed second in the guppy age group and older sister, Jessica achieved ninth in her junior age group. Stephane’s performance has qualified her to compete in Worlds this September, which will also be held in Camps Drift.

“I’m so proud of my girls. They have many competitions coming up and I wish them all the best. I know they will continue to shine,” said Anneke.

Sister-paddlers, Jessica (12) and Stephane (14) Erasmus shone at the recent South African Canoe Championships, both placing very well.
