LIONS International hosts an annual peace poster competition for children aged between 11 and 13-years of age, which is open to all schools in the entire world.
While Kingsburgh Lions has, over the past years, invited local schools in the area to join in each year, this year the club invited physically and intellectually disabled children from the Durban School for the Hearing Impaired in Khotho Mkhunya (formerly Adams) Road, who did not qualify to take part in the international competition, to enter a local mini-peace poster competition which took place on 25 August.
This in a bid to give them the opportunity to use their creative skills.
“A smile is the beginning of peace” was the theme and the learners who took part created some beautiful posters. There were two categories: Deaf learners and intellectually disabled learners and first and second prizes were awarded in each category.
First prize among the deaf learners went to Shazia Hassan and second prize to Prema Padayachee.
First prize in the intellectually disabled category went to Mfanafuthi Chamane and second prize to Ntokozo Nkwanyana.
