This good beginners’ hike will be a short hike through this pretty nature reserve, which is split into two sections by Tara Road.

The top section is a lovely coastal, lowland forested area with good views out to the Bluff and some sections of the refinery. On the lower part are the remnants of a large swamp that once covered this part of the Bluff and which is now a bird sanctuary with great bird watching facilities overlooking the freshwater pan and wetlands. Hikers are to meet at 1.45pm at the reserve parking area in Tara Road.

Directions: Take the Jacobs off-ramp from the southern freeway, turn seaward at the traffic lights into Quality Street and follow this road until Tara Road, where you turn left. The reserve is immediately on the right-hand side of the road. People are encouraged to stay afterwards for a bring your own braai/ picnic and a social or even birdwatching at the hide. This 6km hike is graded one, easy.
