PICARDY Bazooka Shellhole in Amanzimtoti inducted a new Old Bill and two MOTHs at its AGM on Friday, 11 August.
For the humble shellhole in Amanzimtoti, this addition is a rather big deal.

The newly inducted Old Bill, Bill Riley proudly took up his position on Friday, 11 August. Two previous recruits, Louis Luther and Barry Bush were inducted into the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTHs).

Bill Riley is the Sergeant Major of the shellhole and previous deputy Old Bill.  Having matriculated at Port Shepstone High School, Bill trained and joined the South African Airways as a helicopter flight engineer in 1973, where he formed part of 15 Squadron. After his 41 year service term, the Old Bill joined the local shellhole situated in Amanzimtoti and last week took the reins at the helm of the shellhole.

MOTH Louis Luther served his time in 1983 and 1984, within the 1 Special Service Batallion armour regiment. He then moved on to the civilian force with the Umvoti Mounted Rifles. After being a recruit at the shellhole for some three months, Louis now holds the title of MOTH.

MOTH Barry Bush trained in 1970 and served in the 1 Parachute Batallion. After his time there, he moved to the 3 Parachute Batallion and then the 44 Parachute Brigade. For some three months Barry has been a recruit in preparation of becoming a fully fledged MOTH.

The Picardy Bazzoka Shellhole was formed from the joining of two separate charters.

The Picardy Shellhole was chartered in July, 1927 and was named after the WW1 song, ‘Roses of Picardy’. Bazooka Shellhole was chartered in 1945 and named after the American 2.75 rocket launcher. The merging of these two charters took place in 1948.

The On Guard Shellhole in Umbogintwini then merged with the Picardy Bazooka Shellhole in 1950. This merged shellhole is situated at the Amanzimtoti Bowling Club by Lords and Legends.
