Amanzimtoti police issue warning over car sale scams

If you’re shopping for a new car, look out for fake or misleading dealership advertisements in newspapers.

Amanzimtoti SAPS appeals to the community to not fall prey to a scam where people purchase cars that they have only seen advertised in newspapers.

In some cases the buyer has only contacted the seller telephonically or only met the seller once, and has little or no information about the seller.

The police advise that if you’re shopping for a new car, look out for fake or misleading dealership advertisements in newspapers. Always read the fine print in any car-related advertising and before signing a contract for a vehicle purchase or lease.

If you believe the dealer has engaged in false advertising, omitted required disclosures or otherwise broken the law, file a complaint at a police station.

“Do not make any cash deposits or exchange money into the accounts of people you do not know or have never met,” said Amanzimtoti SAPS communication officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy.

“Make sure everything is legitimate and that you have all the required papers for your purchase. Also verify the existence and real identity of the person you are purchasing from. You should never deposit money into anyone’s account when you have not met the person you are dealing with and until you feel secure about their living address and identity details. Do not give your money to strangers.”
