Watch: Lions leap onto giraffe in death tussle

A group effort by the Serondela pride in Botswana proved too much for an exhausted giraffe.

Travel enthusiast Chris Gonsalves has seen wondrous things, but a recent sighting in the Chobe National Park in Botswana will remain a highlight of his adventures.

Gonsalves shared the footage he took with LatestSightings.com. The video shows an outnumbered giraffe falling prey to the Serondela lion pride.

“The giraffe had clearly been chased to the point of exhaustion, as it was just inches away from the closest lions, and frozen to the spot. The lionesses, which had done all the chasing, were tired too and knowing the giraffe wasn’t going anywhere in a hurry, they decided to rest right next to it,” reads the article on the website.

The video then shows one of the lionesses being flung to the ground after launching itself onto the distracted giraffe’s back.

“Before the giraffe could even run a few metres, another lion jumped on its back, this time going for the neck! The lion didn’t get a strong enough grip, and with a flick of its neck, the giraffe shook it off.

“The giraffe was desperate at this point. It tried kicking to get the pride away, but its feet were shaky, and it was trembling. The same lioness that targeted its neck managed to climb the giraffe again, this time getting a decent grip.”

The giraffe again managed to buck off the lioness, but it had no fight left in it and collapsed to the ground.
