Car of the Year: Toyota dominates with multiple winners

The Japanese automotive manufacturer won five out of ten.

The 2022 South African Guild of Motoring Journalists‘ (SAGMJ) Car of the Year competition winners were announced this week.

Automotive influencers voted digitally to determine SA’s best new models in several categories. The Toyota Corolla Cross was the overall winner, as well as worthy winners in two other categories.

The Japanese multinational automotive manufacturer also won best Compact Car of the Year – Toyota Urban Cruiser; Best Compact Family Car of the Year – Toyota Corolla Cross; Best New Energy Car of the Year – Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid and Best Adventure SUV Car of the Year – Toyota Land Cruiser 300.

Stephen Jones, General Sales Manager at Halfway Toyota Shelly Beach said they are extremely proud to be involved with the Toyota brand. “Toyota has brought out a number of new vehicles in the last year. The Toyota Cross has done incredibly well. The Urban Cruiser also a new vehicle has done incredibly well in terms of value for money, it is priced very well. The Urban Cruiser has come in between the Toyota Agya, Starlet and the Toyota Cross.”

The Urban Cruiser has a 1.5L engine and is slightly raised, and comes in at a good price in terms of value for money.

“The Toyota Cross has been the manufacturer’s top seller. This vehicle for a few months outsold the VW Polo. The Land Cruiser 300 has done well globally, it is an incredible vehicle with a V6 diesel engine. The shape has also changed. We are trying to get more stock of Land Cruiser 300 because it has done well.”
