Max van den Heever wins bronze division at KZN champs

Umkomaas proudly had six ladies playing in the champs, across all three divisions, a first for many years.

The ladies KZN Championships took place at Royal Durban Golf Club recently. The course was in very good condition, especially considering it was under water just a few weeks ago. Naturally, there were some wet spots, the fairways didn’t have much run, and the rough was seriously rough!

Given the field included some of SA’s best amateurs, the course was set up for a challenge with the gold and silver division teeing it up from the back tees. Add in the 25km an hour wind and it played very long, nothing like smoking your driver on a par 4 to still face 220 metres to the green.

Umkomaas proudly had six ladies playing in the champs, across all three divisions, a first for many years.

The conditions proved challenging for most, but Max van den Heever continued her excellent form and came out tops, winning the bronze division with nett 68, four shots better than her handicap. Well done Max, we are all so proud of you.

Umkomaas’ bragging rights continued with Sabiha Hulley one of the KZN team who finished runner-up at the inaugural Mid-Amateur Interprovincial Tournament held at Parys Golf Club last week.

Played off scratch, the ladies showed their mettle, taking down some of the biggest names on their road to honours. It was only the eventual winners, Southern Cape captained by Springbok veteran Sandra Winters, who got the better of the KZN team all week.

Their win was especially sweet given that since the flooding, none of the ladies had been able to play golf. Sabiha took to hitting balls in the garage to keep her eye in.

The field of 66 players were delighted to play the full course on Saturday for the monthly medal competition, after several of the holes, previously closed for rehabilitation post flooding were opened for the first time in weeks.

Thanks to Devlyn, Graham and the team who have taken such good care of the course, which is in excellent condition. We are grateful that we did not suffer as much damage as some the courses up and down the coast.

Sue Boucher was the May Monthly Glass winner at Umkomaas Golf Club, with captain Graham Coxell.

Ron Clark’s three-better than par nett 67 saw him lift the Halfway Malanda Monthly Mug for May. Sue Boucher took the ladies Medal Glass with a nett 74.

A division winner, on 38 points, was Patrick Ndlovu, who also bagged the jackpot. B division was won by visitor Ryan Nortje on 38 points. It seems 38 points was the magic number as it was this score that saw Willy Boucher take top spot in the C division as well. Sabiha Hulley won the ladies A division, and Sue Boucher the B division.

There was a slew of two clubs, Jordan Benardis, Kavish Seepershad, Wayne Addison, Devlyn Fraser, Sabiha Hulley, Frans Blom and Wally Kent.
