Hibiscus Quilters Guild assists charities

The guild's second project was to make quilts for CHOC (children with cancer).

The past few months have been busy for members of the Hibiscus Quilters Guild.

Easing of lockdown restrictions saw the guild hold meetings again.

Charities that focused on the needs of children which were in desperate need of support were identified and a day was arranged for quilters to begin working on items.

Women went home and continued to make items which resulted in a variety of donations being produced.

Items to be placed in pull string bags and donated to charity.

Light a Spark is a charity that supports a number of initiatives, and what caught the attention of the guild was the support given to premature babies and young rape victims.

Premature babies require vests that are easily removed when special care is needed for them.

Young rape victims, both girls and boys from two years old are supported in a recovery period.

The women made pull string bags and then added items to place in the bags as per a suggested list.

The items were handed over to the organisation who were very impressed by the commitment and concern that the quilters had shown for the children.

The guild’s second project was to make quilts for CHOC (children with cancer).

Women used donated fabric and fabric of their own to make 25 quilts which were handed to Ntobeko from CHOC September 28.

Ntobeko provided insight into the organisation and explained that in many cases children have treatment for a long period of time.

In some cases, due to transport and other logistical issues the child and a parent is given full board and lodging at a residence.

The quilts will be used in these residences for the children.

Guild members adopt community projects and are sometimes able to assist more than one organisation.

The Guild endeavours to provide donations to a charity every year.
