Hobby club brings sci-fi universe to life

Carl Coetzee, an Amanzimtoti resident, started a Warhammer Club in the area in August last year, after realising that there were no existing clubs nearby.

This is an arts and crafts hobby club that builds and paints figurines based on a science fiction universe called Warhammer 40K.

The aim of Carl's club is to bring people together to either assemble and paint the Warhammer figurines based on different factions and use the completed figurines to play on a tabletop game similar to Dungeons and Dragons.

Warhammer has two divisions, 40K and Age of Sigmar. 40K is the science fiction universe similar to Star Wars and has different factions of Space Marines, Necrons and Sisters of Battle.

Age of Sigmar is the fantasy universe similar to Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings with different factions such as Orcs and Elves.

An example of the factions that are in Warhammer 40K is Adeptus Astartes or Space Marines. Imagine warrior monks like Knights Templar, but in space and with guns.

Adeptus Astartes or as they are better known as Space Marines are Imperium of Man’s elite genetically engineered super soldiers.

There are two types of Space Marines, the First-born marines which are the most numerous and oldest form of Space Marines, which have 19 additional organs, and the Primaris Space Marines, which are taller and tougher versions, with an additional three organs than the regular Space Marines.

Space Marines are organised into Chapters which are led by a Chapter Master.

They live in Fortress Monasteries on their own planet and only have 1000 Marines at any one time.

The Warhammer Club is extending its reach to the mid-South Coast.
