Editor's note

One small step … plenty to go

It's been an exciting, if nerve-wracking week, for some.

It was Back to School for the South Coast this week. For many children, it was their first day in a totally new envirnoment.

Sending your child off to ‘big school’ is probably not as risky as Neil Armstong’s famous moon landing expedition back in 1969.

One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind …

For some parents, sending their child off into a ‘new world’ may feel a little like sending them off to the moon.

It is, however, one small step for your child, the first of many as he or she embarks on a school career that will hopefully bring much joy and excitement.

As a parent, one of your roles is to support your child as much as possible as they make the leap.

With this in mind, proper nutrition is important and not always so easy to provide in today’s challenging economic climate.

It’s also a very good idea to provide adequate sun protection.

We hope you enjoy our selection of photographs from local schools in print and on our websites.

With schools open, traffic flow becomes intense in the mornings and afternoons.

Take it easy on the roads. It’s really not necessary to speed or take risks.

There have been a number of drownings, sadly, of late.

While our lifesavers generally do a sterling job, there aren’t guards at every beach, so it’s important to respect the ocean, or any body of water for that matter.

What often goes unseen by the general public is the excellent work our local SAPS does when it comes to trying to recover the missing bodies.

Editor Colleen Haggard will be back in the hot seat next week.

This means yours truly may have to attend some courses, hopefully at Port Shepstone Country Club or Southbroom Golf Club.
