Editor's note

New hope on the horizon

A new freedom exists, one which school leavers are encouraged to use wisely.

Matric results are out and it would seem that our local schools have done quite well.

This is a tribute to their hard work and also that of the many teachers who play such a crucial role in their success.

Timera Naidoo has put Port Shepstone Secondary on the map with her astonishing results. Second in the country… that’s phenomenal.

She popped in at the Herald offices on Tuesday this week and aside from being super-clever, she is also humble and thoughtful.

No doubt, she will go far in life.

Along with all the other matriculants, she is wished all the very best as new horizons and opportunities beckon.

There’s a saying that goes something like this: people look back on their lives and tend to regret the things they didn’t do as opposed to the things they did do.

Obviously this isn’t licence to go berserk, but with schooldays behind them, a new freedom exists, one which school leavers are encouraged to use wisely.

On a lighter note, my one regret is not studying to be a maths professor, especially after getting 97 percent for the subject at school.

Okay, it was 33 percent at half year, 30 percent at trials and 34 percent for finals, so added together makes 97 – I think!

Which probably explains why I opted for life writing rather than adding things up.

So, find your strength, your passion, and pursue that. Good luck.
