‘No’ to violence

We also need to do more to protect our vulnerable children.

IF ever there was a campaign in need of a serious transformation it would be the `16 days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children’.

This year’s event kicks off this Friday and its theme is `Count me in: Together moving a non-violent South Africa forward’. Even the theme is just words strung together which will do nothing for women and children who are being abused.

White ribbons are worn and white balloons released at functions to highlight this scourge. Sadly, the victims are never actually invited to the gatherings, these are usually attended by officials.

We need harsher sentences for perpetrators of domestic violence.

Men and boys need to be educated about not treating women and girls as being inferior and to stop physical, emotional and sexual abuse.

We also need to do more to protect our vulnerable children.
