Gold and bronze for senior tennis players

The coast has a number of excellent senior tennis players.

Seven local tennis players featured as part of the four teams KwaZulu-Natal sent to the Winelands Masters tournament in Cape Town last week, with all four teams securing medals.

Ian Ackerman (Umtentweni) played in the 70A Cup alongside Terry Trotter, Jilda Manson and Phumla Xoyteni.

They played Western Province in the final, playing two singles, two doubles and one mixed, and won fairly comfortably.

Raj Naganna (Umtentweni) and Cathy Kirton (Umtentweni), plus Dee Algie (Uvongo), played in the 70B Cup and secured the bronze medal. Their fourth was Roy Govender.

When it came to the 60B Cup, Sharon van der Schyff (Southbroom), Renee Purtell (Southbroom) and Johan van Niekerk (Uvongo) played in the team that won the bronze medal.
Their fourth was Braam de Villiers from Richards Bay.

The other KZN team won gold in the 60B Cup (Group 1), but there were no players in this team from the Ugu region. This team was represented by Grant Lister-James, Phonnie Roos, Ronel Botha and Susan Roos.
