Plenty tennis on the go

The wet weather abated in time for social tennis.

Some local players have been selected to take part in the Tennis South Africa 60+ Masters Inter-pro in The Winelands, Western Cape, from October 2 to 6.

They are Ian Ackerman (70A Cup), Raj Naganna, Cathy Kirton and Deirdre Algie (all 70B Cup), plus Johan van Niekerk, Renee Purtell and Sharon van der Schyff (60B Cup).

Back home, the Ugu ProKennex Masters tennis tournament will be held from Thursday, December 5, to Sunday, December 8, this year.

It’s a TSA-sanctioned event and carries national ranking points, attracting Masters players (over 30 years old) from all over the country.

Venues this year will be Umtentweni, Uvongo and Douglas Mitchell tennis clubs.

Ugu Tennis Association (UTA) has other things on the go as well at the moment. In other news, Ugu teams will be selected based on strength to play in the KZN Inter-District tournament in mid-November. This was a tournament Ugu won last year, and they will be keen to defend.

The inaugural UTA 50s Junior League (similar to the recently concluded 190s League) has gotten off to a good start, with six teams competing at Southbroom Tennis Club.
There was great team spirit and wonderful sportsmanship on display. The next round is on October 13, with the finals scheduled for October 20.
