Mid-Am challenges await for Southbroom golfers

Mid-Am golf is competitive and the pair will need to be in top form.

Gavin Sole and Jean-Marc Bouic are both seriously looking forward to the SA Mid-Amateur IPT to be played at Humewood Golf Club in mid-October.

The two Southbroom GC members are part of the KZN mid-am team that will do battle at this famed layout, where wind is a major factor.

They will, in all likelihood, play foursomes together.

KZN is languishing in the B division, and while it’s a new team in many respects with five rookies, hopes are high that a win can be achieved.

The team comprises (in alphabetical order) Jean-Marc Bouic, Ashwin Krishen (captain), Gitesh Maharaj, Grant Olivier, Mark Olivier, Vivek Singh, Gavin Sole and Kalvin van Rensburg. Neil Champion is the manager.

Meanwhile, the local mid-am circuit visited Southbroom recently for the third fixture of the new cycle.

Kalvin van Rensburg (Toti) won the tournament on two under par 70 to edge out home town favourite Gavin Sole, who had 72.

Kalvin now sees his ranking climb to second after the three fixtures, behind Jean-Marc Bouic, who currently tops the log.

Bouic shot 73 to tie with Saishrien Rasen (Maritzburg GC).

Sole had an awful start, with a triple on the third hole, but finished strongly with birdies on 15 and 17 and an eagle on the 18th, just to show he’s still very much got it.

Fifth spot went to Grant Olivier (Drak Gardens) on 74, with Jitesh Manohar (Royal Durban) next on 75.

Mark Olivier (Drak Gardens) and Vivek Singh (Toti) were next on 76.

It was a small field, due in part to the Champion of Champions being played at Kloof CC, so there was no team result.

Order of Merit (after three fixtures):
1 Jean-Marc Bouic 115
2 Kalvin van Rensburg 90
3 Grant Olivier 50
4 Gitesh Maharaj 40
4 Leon Naidoo 40
4 Bradley Grant 40
4 Gavin Sole 40
8 Ashwin Krishen 37
9 Sashrien Rasen 35
10 Vivek Singh 34
10 Mark Cowie 34
