Breakthrough win for ‘masterful’ Kelsey

The 2024 Lifestyle Property Developers SA Women’s Masters concluded in dramatic fashion at San Lameer Country Club last Friday.

After a three-year hiatus, the tournament’s return brought top-tier professional women’s golf back to the region, reaffirming its reputation as the ‘Home of Women’s Golf’.

The event teed off with the traditional Pro-Am tournament last Wednesday, where professional golfer Zethu Myeki and her team comprising Vusi Maphumulo, Jonathon Muthige, and Mnqobi Godongwane emerged victorious.

Over the next two days, the WPGA players competed for the prize fund of R400 000.

Gabrielle Venter dominated round one, carding an impressive -5 to set up a four-shot lead over Kelsey Nicholas, who finished at -1.

However, the final day saw the leaderboard shaken up.

Venter struggled to maintain her lead, allowing Nicholas and Tandi McCallum to close the gap.

In a tense battle down the final stretch, Nicholas showed remarkable composure, making a crucial birdie on the 18th to finish on -1, securing her first-ever professional win.

McCallum, who had mounted an extraordinary comeback with four birdies on the back nine, finished second at even par.

Nicholas’s victory marks a significant milestone in her career.

“It’s my first professional win, and it feels surreal. All the hard work, the sacrifices, and the small victories, they’ve all led to this moment. I can’t put into words what this means to me,” she said.

The tournament was a great success, not only for the players but also for the promotion of the South Coast as a premier destination for both tourism and investment.
