Chris putts his way to Mid Am victory

The greens were quick, especially downhill.

In another life, Chris Zietsman could have been a comedian. He often has his golfing mates in stitches of laughter with his humour.

But his serious side came out at the KZN Mid Amateur Championships at Selborne Park recently.

Well, for a while, just long enough to put together two superb rounds of golf to win the championships.

This was played at his home course, Selborne Park Golf Club, where he is the current club champion.

“I had no expectations; just came out to enjoy the day and holed a few putts, played nicely,” he said.

The weather was decent for most of the day but did get up towards the end, making the finish a challenge.

Chris carded 69 and 70 to win by two from the Big Fish, Gavin Sole (Southbroom), who had 72 and 69.

“Helps it you can putt a bit,” he joked afterwards.

Kalvin van Rensburg (Amanzimtoti) was third on 72 and 71.

Hard luck story of the day goes to Jan-Willem McDermott (Umdoni Park).

He opened with a solid 71 and then made eagle, birdie, birdie on the first three holes of his afternoon round to get to five under par to catch Chris.

But he couldn’t keep it going, and things on the back nine didn’t go quite as planned, and he eventually had to settle for seventh on 71 and 78.

Clive Palm (Glenvista) was fourth on 69 and 76.

Grant Olivier (Drakensberg Gardens) was fifth on 72 and 74.

Terance Richardson (Dainfern) was sixth on 72 and 75.

Gitesh Maharaj (Amanzimtoti) and Bruce Marx (Dundee) were tied for eighth on 152, Gitesh shooting 77 and 75 and Bruce 71 and 81.

Saishrien Rasen (Maritzburg GC) was tenth on 76 and 77, Tom Ryan (Parkview) eleventh on 75 and 79, with Jean-Marc Bouic (Southbroom) in twelfth on 77 and 78.

The mid-amateur team to play in the IPT at Humewood in October has not yet been announced.
