Margate defeat Sheppie in league upset
The last round will be played at Selborne on August 18, where Margate play Umdoni and Southbroom play Selborne.
Selborne’s league golf team finally showed why they are the two-time defending champions by defeating derby rivals Umdoni Park 8-4 at Margate Country Club last Sunday.
However, it’s a bit late for Selborne to win the Southern KZN Handicap League for 2024, but this will ease the pain a little.
It also saw them sneak ahead of Umdoni in terms of avoiding the dreaded Wooden Spoon.
The big talking point was the result in the other game, where Margate took advantage of home course territory to beat Port Shepstone 6,5-5,5.
Although Margate have been much improved, this was still an upset as Sheppie have been good.
Well, until last Sunday.
Sheppie may have felt a little like Thriston Lawrence at The Open – in the lead with the trophy in sight.
On the bright side, Lawrence finished a commendable fourth (and pocketed a hefty sum), and it’s possible the league loss may not hurt Sheppie.
But it does open things up again and bring Southbroom, who had a bye, right back into it.

If Margate win, they win the league outright.
If they halve, they will edge out Sheppie on match points, but then it will then depend on Southbroom’s result.
If Margate halve, Southbroom need to beat Selborne 8-4.
If Margate lose, Southbroom need to beat Selborne 7-5.
If Margate and Southbroom lose, Sheppie win the league.
If Margate loses and Southbroom halves, Sheppie win the league.
Lots of ifs and buts; time will ultimately tell.
