Southbroom Classic goes down to the wire

The weather played the game, despite being a bit breezy at times.

The 34th Southbroom Men’s Classic at Southbroom Golf Club was once again a great success, with 168 entries, some from overseas.

It was highly competitive, with three different leaders during the four rounds. In the end, Werner Duggan and Thulani Xolo won by a single point.

Monday was a perfect winter’s day, with a negligible north-easterly blowing, and the scores showed.

Four teams scored 44 points and one 46 points, but nobody could keep up with early pacesetters Alex Paulsen and Roger Lawrence, who had 49 points.

Tuesday was a slightly more testing day, with the north-easter picking up but not enough to strike fear into the hearts of the players.

Another three teams finished the day with 44 points, and two teams on 45.

None, however, were able to keep up with Jack Noble and Alan Sutton, who had a very eventful round.

Alan had a hole-in-one on the 8th hole, with the pair scoring 47 points and a one point lead after two days,

Runners-up Ig and Morné Erasmus.

It was the second ace on the 8th hole in two days, with Justin Hutcheson holing out on the Monday.

Wednesday was a break day.

Thursday arrived, and with it, a fresh south-westerly wind.

It didn’t seem to deter too many, with four teams on 43 points, one on 45.

Best round of the day was returned by Ig and Morné Erasmus on 48 points to propel themselves up the leaderboard.

After the third round, they sat just one point behind new tournament leaders Werner Duggan and Thulani Xolo, who had been consistent throughout the first three days.

Four teams were within three points of each other going into the final day, but ultimately, it came down to the two leading pairs.

They matched one another blow for blow, and both ended the day with 42 points.

Werner and Thulani managed to keep their one point lead intact, doing just enough to win the Classic.

Thanks were extended to Barry Elliott and Alan Hall of Hibiscus Brokers for their magnificent umbrella sponsorship of the tournament.
