Divan crowned fishing champ

The Margate club had a lot to be proud of.

You could argue that the sports of rugby and freshwater fishing are so completely different that you’d never find the same person doing both.

But that’s not the case at all, as shown by Divan Dixon, who has excelled at both.

The youngster, who attends Suid-Natal Primary, was named junior champion at the recent KZN Region Freshwater Bank Angling Union league finals, held at Nottingham Road dam.

The finals saw the champions from each of the five regions in the province vie for the title of champion.

But before that, it was about determining the team winners, where Margate AC almost took the trophy, but had to settle for second in the end.

The team comprised Irma Botes (captain), Ben Barnard, Dirkie Swanepoel, Lucan Bloem, Gideon van Zyl, Jan Botes and Johan Mahoney. Cecilia Swanepoel was the official for the day.

Nature’s tempestuous spirit added an extra layer of challenge to the proceedings, as winter made its presence known, testing the mettle of anglers with its biting cold and unruly winds.

Despite these adversities, the competitors exhibited unwavering determination, casting their lines into the turbulent waters in hopes of landing the catch that would secure their glory.

At the end of it all, the team trophy went to Dagbreek Young Guns, followed by Margate Geelvis and then SAP Midland Red.

This set the stage for day two, where the individual winners would be decided.

Divan showed his skills to be crowned U13 champion. He turns 13 in August this year.

Other winners were: U19 – D’Angelo Kriel (DCS Kokstad). Ladies – Karma Spies (Dagbreek AC ). Master ladies – Nicolene Mostert (Vryheid AC). Seniors – Jacobus Coetsee (Real Anglers AC). Masters – Sakkie Joubert (Dagbreek AC). Veterans – Piet Bothma (Iscor AC).

Appreciation was extended to the organisers, SAP Midlands AC, whose meticulous planning and execution ensured the seamless orchestration of this highly prestigious event.

Margate AC took second place. They are (from left) Ben Barnard, Dirkie Swanepoel, Lucan Bloem, Gideon van Zyl, Jan Botes, Johan Mahoney, Irma Botes (captain) and Cecilia Swanepoel (official for the day).
